Healthy nutrition is a passion for everyone at the Avera Heart Hospital. We understand that each person’s preferences and needs are different. There is no one-size-fits-all nutrition plan. We want you to enjoy food that is not only healthy, but delicious. We take a Prairie meets Mediterranean approach to these recipes, and they are favorites for our families. In addition, the food we serve in our cafeteria at the hospital is heart healthy, nutritious and full of flavor. We hope you find all of our resources helpful and delicious.

What are Flavonoids?
Flavonoids are antioxidant compounds present in leafy green vegetables, red onions, berries, dark chocolate and beverages such as tea and red wine. Flavonoids form a group of many different compounds of which more than 5000 have been identified. Processing removes a large portion of the flavonoids. For example, Dutch (alkali) processed cocoa powder is low in flavonoids in comparison to natural cocoa powder.
What are the Heart Protective Benefits of Flavonoids?
• Helps prevent cholesterol from sticking to arteries. • Lowers blood pressure • Increases blood flow • Lowers inflammation • Improves blood vessel function
